Make your own Nappy Wraps

I will keep adding better pictures as I make more of my own wraps

You need;

Nappy pattern to follow ( I made mine from another wrap that I liked the fit of, and altered it to suit)

PUL Waterproof Fabric

Fold over Elastic (FOE)

Hook and Loop fastening

I start by cutting the nappy out of the PUL on a fold, this ensures that the wrap is identical on both sides and the gusset cut is even.

You can either use a pattern for the gusset flaps, or you can just mock them up out of the curved cut left by the main part of the nappy. If you choose to so this I always find that it is best to leave one end blunter than the other, so that the blunt end is on the posterior of the nappy, and the narrow part is near the front, ensuring that the nappy is a slimmer and more comfortable fit at the front.

First of all, stitch the gusset flaps to either side of the nappy. Place the fabrics wrong side together and stitch the narrow part of the flap to the front of the nappy. Your stitchs want to be approximately 5mm from the fabric edge, and starting and finishing a little short of the beginning and end, as this will give you somewhere to tuck the elastic into. This part will be covered by the FOE at a later point.

Stitch the loop part of the fastening onto the front of the nappy, so that when you edge the nappy later it will give it a neater finish (I don’t stitch the hook tabs on until later so that I have somewhere to hide the FOE ends)

Start by Stitching the FOE onto the gusset parts of the nappy, you need to (somehow) have the elastic at full stretch, but without making the stitching too long, this may take a bit of practice, but persever as this will give you that all important snug fit around the leg area.

Now begin stitching the FOE from the top point of either of the flaps, with the nappy itself wrong side up, do not stretch the elastic at any time, when you reach the gusset sections you need to tuck and catch the gusset elastic in under your elastic and continue, it is essential that you get the elastic caught or you will end up with a hole in your nappy. Follow the edge of the nappy all the way around and up the other side, taking in the other gusset strap as you go. When you finish trim the elastic to the edge of the fabric.

s3000356Now stitch the FOE onto the back edge of the nappy. You need to leave at least 7cm of elastic off the end, to be dealt with at a later point. Stitch until level with the taper of the nappy, and then pull the elastic at full stretch, stitch with the FOE at full stretch until level with the opposite leg taper and then continue without stretching. Allow 7cm at this end too.

Fold the tail ends at 45* angle into the nappy body, and put your hook tabs over the top, secure with stitches, and hey Presto! you have hidden the unsightly ends away. Do the same to the other side, and you’ve finished – one lovely nappy!
