My thoughts today have turned several times to women, of all walks of life, all situations, those of times past as well as my contemporaries.
It has been a day of hard questioning, quite without realising that this day would have me contemplating the fate of ‘other’ women, those that do not have the structure, support and security that I am blessed with in my life, my 5 year old has been asking many, many difficult questions.
There are those that are difficult to answer, by dint of the fact that I probably don’t know the answer myself without looking it up.
“What is a volcano? Why does it do that?” Pretty straightforward stuff…
Move onto
Ethnic Cleansing during WW2!
Yup, at 5 years old we have been having conversations about ‘the naughty people’ shooting others so “that they fall into holes are are all buried together, that means they’re dead doesn’t it Mummy?”
“What did they do wrong? Why did that naughty man think that they weren’t as nice as everyone else?”
HOW?
If someone can find me a way of explaining the atrocities of War, both ancient and modern, to a 5 year old please, please let me know, as I have been floundering today, but tackled the topic none the less, and for that one thing, I am proud of myself.
Hubby says that I am too honest with her, and that I should have said it was too complicated for her to understand and left it till she was older. I say that Hubby’s (bordering on the obsessive) fixation with WW2 films may have just had it’s ultimate impact. Thank you very much Darling Husband…
She’s picked it up from somewhere, and she’s trying to make sense of what she’s heard / been told.
And knowledge is power right? So…
We will never understand what truly motivates people to commit such acts, what makes those people put a price on a life, or the lack of it. But these things are happening, and happening to half the world’s population, Women.
Take 5 this evening to think about those people, and applaud their achievements to continue ‘living’ despite the situations that they find themselves within. Harness their resolve so that you may truly appreciate the simple, but most blessed, things that you have in your life.
Family, home, warmth, food, security, water, power, independence, education, the list is almost too long to contemplate. Put aside your petty upsets, because that is what they are, and be Thankful for all that you have, as it is SO much, and maybe you just need to be reminded of it every once in a while.
