International Woman’s Day

March 9, 2011

My thoughts today have turned several times to women, of all walks of life, all situations, those of times past as well as my contemporaries.

It has been a day of hard questioning, quite without realising that this day would have me contemplating the fate of ‘other’ women, those that do not have the structure, support and security that I am blessed with in my life, my 5 year old has been asking many, many difficult questions.

There are those that are difficult to answer, by dint of the fact that I probably don’t know the answer myself without looking it up.

“What is a volcano? Why does it do that?” Pretty straightforward stuff…

Move onto

Ethnic Cleansing during WW2!

Yup, at 5 years old we have been having conversations about ‘the naughty people’ shooting others so “that they fall into holes are are all buried together, that means they’re dead doesn’t it Mummy?”

“What did they do wrong? Why did that naughty man think that they weren’t as nice as everyone else?”

HOW?

If someone can find me a way of explaining the atrocities of War, both ancient and modern, to a 5 year old please, please let me know, as I have been floundering today, but tackled the topic none the less, and for that one thing, I am proud of myself.

Hubby says that I am too honest with her, and that I should have said it was too complicated for her to understand and left it till she was older. I say that Hubby’s (bordering on the obsessive) fixation with WW2 films may have just had it’s ultimate impact. Thank you very much Darling Husband…

She’s picked it up from somewhere, and she’s trying to make sense of what she’s heard / been told.

And knowledge is power right? So…

We will never understand what truly motivates people to commit such acts, what makes those people put a price on a life, or the lack of it. But these things are happening, and happening to half the world’s population, Women.

Take 5 this evening to think about those people, and applaud their achievements to continue ‘living’ despite the situations that they find themselves within. Harness their resolve so that you may truly appreciate the simple, but most blessed, things that you have in your life.

Family, home, warmth, food, security, water, power, independence, education, the list is almost too long to contemplate. Put aside your petty upsets, because that is what they are, and be Thankful for all that you have, as it is SO much, and maybe you just need to be reminded of it every once in a while.

Get Lippy!

Weight Loss and (too much?) Activity

April 2, 2009

So, posts have been a little thin on the ground, but then again so have I…

My diagnosis with Coeliac Disease around three years ago seemed to be the answer to my constant battle with maintaining a healthy weight. And for a while this was so, but 11 months after having my second baby, the weight is dropping off again, so my attentions have had to turn to calorie counting and extra protein, rather than the allotment and getting the seeds in in time!

I have an extremely healthy diet, and I have never had a really sweet tooth nor been a fan of convienience foods so I have always eaten quite alot to keep my calories up throughout the day, but right now I don’t think that that alone is enough so I have had to redouble the efforts to gain weight.

Now, this will sound terribly girly of me, but this summer I have two weddings to attend, and I would like to look ‘good’ not  ‘skinny’ so let battle commence!

So while I’m busy eating myself into a stupor, rest assured that the allotment is now being set with beetroot and parsnips, the lettuces, calabrese, sweetcorn and peas are all growing good in the greenhouse and the other seeds are swelling nicely waiting to spring into germination.

A Mum friend actually suggested that I should do less (growing, digging etc) and then I could ‘focus’on my weight issues, she didn’t seem to acknowledge that if I didn’t ‘focus’on the growing then there wouldn’t be anything for me to eat! Nevermind, I’m sure someone will realise one day that we grow the food because we need to, not just because we feel like it and it’s a bit quaint!

Getting Started

November 30, 2007

Okay, I’m totally new to this, so it’ll be a complete learning curve for me, hopefully I’ll improve as time goes on.

I mainly wanted to use this as a way of keeping in touch with friends and family that I don’t really have regular contact with, but as a busy family with plenty of interests I also thought that it could be quite a useful resource to use. I am often asked “how did you do that” or “I’d like the recipe” …so… well here goes.

I’ll be adding as much as I can, especially before the spring, when number two offspring is due to arrive and time will be more than a little limited for a while.

so until then. Adios…
